The Martian by Andy Weir

Best! Opening! Line! Ever! beats “It was the best of times” all to pieces! It did frequently read like a screenplay, so I wasn’t surprised to learn about the movie. And Matt Damon *Mmmwha* I loved Mark Whatney’s sense of humor and his indomitable spirit. I think I laughed the hardest when he said, and I’m paraphrasing here, “Of all the 70s disco hits I could have chosen as my theme song; Rocket Man, etc., etc., I finally chose ‘Stayin’ Alive’.”

It’s not GREAT LITERATURE, okay, I get that; and I did, I found the disco, the 70s sitcom references, forced and contrived. Weir was almost like, “Hey, look, I’m using symbolism!” “Hey, I know what allusions are!” That said, it was thoroughly entertaining, so I recommended it to several of my friends. The movie, (surprisingly, since it seemed to be a screenplay masquerading as a novel) was disappointing IMHO.
