Okay, so this is not what anyone would consider fat-free. But sometimes you just have to splurge!
1 loaf French bread 1 tsp nutmeg
3 eggs 1½ cup milk or heavy whipping cream
¼ cup sugar ¾ cup melted butter
2 tbsps vanilla 1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp cinnamon 1 cup Louisiana cane syrup*
In a large mixing bowl, cream eggs and sugar. Add vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg and mix until well blended. Slowly whisk in milk. Cut the French bread into ¾ inch slices. Soak slices in the egg and milk mixture. In a heavy non-stick skillet, heat butter over medium-high heat. Sauté saturated bread slices on each side until golden brown. Remove sautéed bread to a serving platter lined with paper towels, and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with cane syrup to drizzle on top.
*I’ve also used blackberry syrup (when my jelly doesn’t set. . viola. . it becomes syrup!) or fresh strawberry slices or other fresh fruit as topping.
